Welcome from Michael Thompson, Board Chair
Welcome! I want to take this time to welcome you to our website. The Kansas Soil Health Alliance is a nonprofit founded by farmers and ranchers to assist other producers in making soil a priority on their farm or ranch. All profit on Kansas farms and ranches start with the soil, so let us make it as productive, resilient to weather extremes, and profitable as possible!
My own story started out as a high school senior. I was told to find an off-farm job because it wouldn’t work financially for me to return to the farm. I did get an off-farm job but returned to the farm and we made changes on our farm like no-till, cover crops, and managed grazing to improve our soils and generate revenue. Changes in management helped us cut our expenses and find extra income from more animals and grazing. We have also seen soil improvement in water infiltration and stabilization of yields in both good years and bad. The Kansas Soil Health Alliance board is made up of farmers and ranchers who are changing the way they view and manage their soils.
Though the year, our board will be sharing our own experiences, creating videos, and answering your questions. We will share all the soil health events occurring in Kansas and across the region on our calendar of events. I encourage you to continue to check back for events and updates. Also, if you are having a field day or learning experience please submit it to our calendar. We want everyone to have the opportunity to attend great events.
Now is the time to do all that you can for the soil, and we are here to help you. Before you make any changes, let us help provide you with knowledge and information you can apply on your farm or ranch. We truly believe the statement “take care of the soil, and it will take care of you!”
